Common Barcode Types

UPC Code (also known as UPC-a or GTIN-12)
For all US/Canada retail items
(except special cases listed below)

EAN Code (also known as EAN-13 or GTIN-13)
For retail items to be sold worldwide (except US/Canada).

QR Code (2D)
For many popular mobile applications.

Square	Rectangular

Data Matrix Code (2D)
For Extra Small Space or Large Data Applications.

ISBN (Bookland EAN)
For books, preferably in conjunction with a UPC code.

Periodical Code
For magazines and other periodicals.

Greeting Cards
For cards sold as single card+envelope.

Prescription Drugs (UPN)
For prescription drugs and medical supplies.

SCC-14 Code (also known as GTIN-14, ITF-14, DUN-14)
For pallets, master cartons, outer cartons, inner cartons, and cases.

SSCC-18 Code (also known as GTIN-18 or DUN-18)
For serialized pallets, master cartons, outer cartons, inner cartons, and cases.

Coupon Barcodes
For coupons and discount certificates.

DataBar (RSS)
For produce and other small, hard-to-label products.

Code 39 (also know as Code 3 of 9)
General use: inventory tagging and industrial applications.

Code 128
High-density use: shipping, packing, and more.

GS1-128
Use: Many retail, logistics, and other applications.
