What is it? |

| The GS1-128 barcode allows communication of different pieces of information in a single barcode. For example, it can communicate a product ID and a batch number and an expiration date all in one single GS1-128 barcode. This information is separated and identified using application identifier numbers (shown in parenthesis). These tell the scanner reading the barcode which pieces of information goes into which field of the database it is being scanning into. In our previous example: the product ID will be identified by its application identifier and put in the product ID field of the database. The same goes for the batch number and the expiration date stored in the GS1-128 barcode. There are many different application identifiers allowing for many different pieces of information to be stored and communicated via the GS1-128 barcode.
